Putting the “I” in Team: Interprofessional Patient Centered Care
Speaker: Susan Woodley, R.D.H.
Sponsored by Philips Oral Healthcare

According to research from the University of Iowa, ‘by 2020 the sheer-volume of medical knowledge will double every 73 days.’ Treating our patients as a whole versus focusing on a singular diagnosis represents the future of healthcare delivery. Communication among professionals provides a richness of knowledge that creates a “dream team” for our patients. Collaborative efforts to obtain, share, and process information contributes to consistent patient centered care.

This course is designed to promote intra-office and inter-office communication to cultivate partnerships throughout all aspects of healthcare. An introduction and review of practice guidelines, customized referrals, and documentation will be explored.

Reflection upon past “game changers” in dentistry allows us to look forward and recognize future inter-disciplinary opportunities in healthcare. Participants will engage in a lively discussion on topics related to: elevating communication skills, standardizing office protocols and tailoring documentation. The time is now to “bridge the gap” in healthcare through adaptation, customization and collaboration.

Course Objectives

  • Identify current optimal care practices and expand upon opportunities
  • Review medical emergency protocols
  • Distinguish between inter-office communication and intra-office communication
  • Learn to apply new protocols for: collaboration, referrals, guidelines, and documentation
  • Implement suggestions for seamless communication that will enrich your team environment
  • Identify prospective inter-disciplinary opportunities

Hygienist: 15 hours of resources to build into your portfolio

Kerry, will help you understand the new AAP Classifications for assessment and treatment of gingivitis, periodontitis and peri-implantitis.    To diagnose and treat effectively, we must look beyond the clinical signs of disease and include systemic factors and the presence of biofilm.  The new classifications will help improve your assessment and give clinicians a framework to diagnose periodontal conditions consistently.  These improved assessment strategies will lead to increased treatment acceptance and compliance.  She will give you a synopsis to help you navigate what can seem like a confusing document with patient cases.
Join the seminar and take away the verbal skills and techniques you can use tomorrow in your practice.  Kerry will:

  • Explain why we need to consider risk factors in disease classification
  • Explore the difference between biofilm and non-biofilm induced gingivitis
  • Will help you understand the new staging and grading guidelines for periodontal disease
  • Review the 4 new peri-implantitis classifications
  • Help you implement additional assessment strategies to guide your diagnosis and treatment planning

A COMPLAINT HAS BEEN FILED AGAINST YOU – WHAT DO YOU DO?
Speaker: Sandy Lawlor

Location: Fortinos Community Room
1579 Main St W Hamilton ON L8S 1E6 Canada

A letter arrives from CDHO you think, oh darn it, I’ve  been selected for the Quality Assurance Portfolio audit.  But when you open that letter, you are shocked.  A complaint has been filed against you.  As the panic sets in, you realize you really don’t know what to do.  The number of complaints is increasing against registered dental hygienists.

For example, in 2016, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee (ICRC) reviewed 59 new matters.   They included 27 formal complaints, 18 matters that arose as a result of concerns reported to the Registrar, 10 referrals from the Quality Assurance Committee (QAC), and 4 incapacity inquiries.   A recent class action lawsuit against a local dental practice over IPAC infractions is an indication that times are changing and we must be diligent in the care we provide.

  • This presentation will help you to understand:
  • The role of the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee (ICRC)
  • Who has the right to complain
  • How a complaint gets filed
  • How a complaint is investigated
  • What happens next and how do you respond
  • What are the timelines for a complaint
  • What happens if you are not satisfied with a decision by the Committee
  • What tools do we have to ensure we are focused on meeting CDHO Standards

It is critical that you understand the complaints process and what your response needs to be.

Presenter: Sandy Lawlor, RDH, B.A./B.S.W.
Sandy graduated from the University of Toronto in 1976.  She has practised dental hygiene as a clinician, an educator, an administrator and an advocate. Sandy has served as President both of the ODHA and the CDHA.  She is passionate about the role of the dental hygienist in health care and is committed to providing excellent client care in her current clinical practice.

Whole Mouth Health
Speaker: Mariana Leon

Location: Sobey Community Room
977 Golf Links Rd, Ancaster, ON L9K 1K1

Ever wonder why some clients don’t improve their oral hygiene in spite of your professional recommendations? A carefully designed mechanical plaque control program can improve clients clinical outcomes. However, this approach to prevention is impractical for many individuals. To succeed in improving clients adoption of preventive oral care, dental professionals can and should go beyond providing just routine care and instead engage clients as coaches helping to motivate and optimize their behavior.

This course will present the concept of Client Centered Dentistry and communication strategies to empower your clients to achieve and maintain whole mouth health.

Learning objectives

  • Integrate PCC (Patient Centered Care) principles in chair side connections to help clients become open to investing in their oral health through effective self-care practices.
  • Be familiar with communication styles that resonate with patients to help them achieve whole mouth health
  • Demonstrate motivational interviewing to elicit the patients desire to change.
  • Understand how the P4 approach to health care can help clients adopt good preventive oral care measures as part of their everyday health.
  • Develop and implement an effective at-home fluoride treatment protocol based on appropriate patient risk for caries development.

Mariana is an Academic Relations Manager for Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals. She is based in Montreal, Quebec. Having earned her Dental Hygiene diploma from Maisonneuve College in Montreal, in addition to obtaining a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from San Martin University in Peru in 2001, she has accumulated over fifteen years of clinical experience as both a dental hygienist and a dentist. Before joining Colgate, she was an Education Manager at Philips, where she presented CE programs in Canada.
